Minor Lane Closure, 83 Street

May 11, 2022 – Beginning on or about May 18, 2022, crews will be saw cutting overnight on sidewalks, medians and curb and gutters along 83 Street. The saw cutting work is expected to last approximately 1 week.

To accommodate this work, each night, either a northbound lane or a southbound lane will be closed for approximately 1 to 2 blocks between 82 Avenue (Whyte Ave) and 90 Avenue. The lane closure location will vary and change throughout the work.

Saw cutting is the first step in warranty work. Further work is planned for daytime and includes removal of seasonally damaged and cracked sections of concrete sidewalk and curb and gutters in isolated segments of 1 meter to 10 meters in length. There will be noise associated with this work from construction vehicles and equipment saw cutting the concrete.

To accommodate this work, the public will be impacted in the following areas:

  • Either a southbound or northbound lane of 83 Street will be closed overnight from approximately 9:00pm through about 6:00am.   
  1. The lane will be closed in segments to accommodate work areas about 1 to 2 blocks long.   
  2. The work will occur in segments between 82 Avenue (Whyte Ave) and 90 Avenue and will change location as work progresses.  
  • This nightly closure for saw cutting will be in place (overnight only) for about 1 week. 
  • There will be overnight noise associated with this work. 
  • On-street parking will be closed adjacent to work areas on the east side of 83 Street. Please obey no parking signs.  
  • 24hr pedestrian access will be maintained on either the east or west side of 83 Street.   
  1. Please follow marked pedestrian detours.

April 25, 2022 – Beginning on or about May 2, 2022, crews will be working overnight on sidewalks and curb and gutters along 83 Street. This work is expected to last approximately seven weeks.

To accommodate this work, each night, either the northbound lane or the southbound lane will be closed for approximately 1 to 2 blocks between Argyll Road and 82 Avenue (Whyte Ave). The lane closure location will vary and change throughout the seven weeks of this work.

This is warranty work and includes removal of seasonally damaged and cracked sections of concrete sidewalk and curb and gutters in isolated segments of 1 meter to 10 meters in length, and includes traffic signal detection loop installation. There will be noise associated with this work from construction vehicles, equipment saw cutting and removing the concrete, and crews forming and pouring new concrete.  In order to keep 83 Street open to traffic, crews will perform this work during night hours.

To accommodate this work, the public will be impacted in the following areas:

  • Either the southbound or northbound lane of 83 Street will be closed overnight from approximately 9:00pm through about 6:00am.   
  1. The lane will be closed in segments to accommodate work areas about 1 to 2 blocks long.   
  2. The work will occur in segments between Argyll Road and 82 Avenue (Whyte Ave) and will change location as work progresses.  
  • This nightly closure will be in place (overnight only) until approximately June 25. 
  • There will be overnight noise associated with this work. 
  • On-street parking will be closed adjacent to each work area. Please obey no parking signs.  
  • 24hr pedestrian access will be maintained on either the east or west side of 83 Street.

April 18, 2022 – On April 24, 2022, the City of Edmonton will be installing public art on the Avonmore Stop on 83 Street. This work will occur overnight for one night.

To accommodate this work, the northbound and southbound lane of 83 Street at the Avonmore LRT Stop will be closed overnight (6:30 pm to 6:00 am).

There will be minimal noise associated with this work, primarily from construction vehicles and cranes used to lift the artwork.  In order to not interrupt traffic during the day, crews will perform this work during night hours.

To accommodate this work, the public will be impacted in the following areas:

  • The northbound lane of 83 Street from 73 Avenue to 76 Avenue, and the southbound lane of 83 Street from 71 Avenue to 73 Avenue will be closed overnight (6:30 pm April 24 to 6:00 am April 25).
  • There will be noise associated with this work.
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained.
  • ETS busses will be detoured during this time.

April 5, 2022 – Starting on or about April 12, 2022, TransEd will be working on drainage manholes and catch basins on 83 Street. This work will occur overnight for two consecutive nights.

To accommodate this work, one northbound lane of 83 Street between 82 Avenue and 84 Avenue will be closed overnight (9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.). Work will also be occurring on 83 Street northbound at about 80 Avenue, but the lane will remain open at this location.

There will be minimal noise associated with this work such as construction vehicles and portable generators.  In order to not interrupt traffic during the day, crews will perform this work during night hours.

To accommodate this work, the public will be impacted in the following areas:

  • One northbound lane from 82 Avenue to 84 Avenue will be closed overnight (9:00 pm to 6:00 am) for about 2 consecutive nights, beginning April 12.
  • There will be noise associated with this work.
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained.

February 17, 2022 – Starting on February 18, 2022, crews will be performing underground drainage testing on 83 Street northbound between 84 Avenue and 87 Avenue. To accommodate this work, one northbound lane on 83 Street will be closed continuously from approximately 9:00am on Friday February 18, 2022, through about 9:00pm Sunday February 20, 2022.

There will be minimal noise from portable generators associated with this work. In order to perform the tests, equipment will block the left northbound lane which requires the lane to remain closed throughout the duration of the test. Workers may not be present during some stages of the testing.

To accommodate this work, the public will be impacted in the following areas:

· One northbound through lane on 83 Street from 84 Avenue to 87 Avenue will be closed.

· Pedestrian access and mall access will be maintained.

December 3, 2021 – Starting on or about December 6, 2021, crews will perform testing and commissioning activities along the 13-kilometer Valley Line Southeast LRT. These activities include surveying and fine-tuning the track using specialized on-track mobile equipment. This work will occur intermittently for four to six weeks during the daytime, from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Road users can expect to see an on-rail specialized diesel locomotive performing minor grinding and buffing at localized areas to fine-tune the tracks. The equipment will cross the tracks at intersections periodically. Flag-persons will be on-site to assist with traffic.

There will be minimal noise associated with this work, including sounds of the slow-rolling diesel engine and grinding equipment.

There will be no pedestrian impacts.

November 10, 2021 – Starting on November 14, 2021, crews will be performing rail works on 85 Street and 95 Avenue.

To accommodate this work, the public will be impacted in the following ways:
• 95 Avenue, west of 85 Street: The eastbound through and left-turn traffic movement across 85 Street will be closed, motorists will be permitted to turn right onto southbound 85 Street.
• 95 Avenue, east of 85 Street: The westbound left-turn traffic movement across 85 Street will be closed.
• 85 Street, just north of 95 Avenue: Southbound traffic across 95 Avenue will be closed. Motorists will be permitted to turn right onto westbound 95 Avenue and turn left onto eastbound 95 Avenue.
• 85 Street, from 93 Avenue to 95 Avenue: One northbound through lane on 85 Street will be closed between 93 Avenue and 95 Avenue.

This work will occur at the following times:
• Nighttime closures (9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.) from Sunday, November 14 to Friday, November 19.
• All-day closure (6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) from Friday, November 19 to Monday, November 22.

There is noise associated with this work, including the occasional banging of hammers and steel and the humming of equipment from the crane and or light plant.

To accommodate this change, the intersection will have “flashing” traffic lights for 72 consecutive hours before being switched to complete activation.

The “flashing” traffic lights are a prerequisite to ensuring the train and traffic lights work in coordination for the safety of all road users. Flagpersons will be on-site to ensure the safe movement of all road users.

There will be no impacts on pedestrians.

Update – This work is scheduled to start on Thursday, October 7

September 27, 2021 – Starting on or about Friday, October 1, crews will be performing rail maintenance work along the 13 km alignment. The work will entail the operation of a rail grinder to grind and polish the track, improving the track performance for the trains. Work will start at the Mill Woods Stop and gradually advance to the 102 Street Stop Downtown. This work will take place during the evening and early-morning hours from approximately 6:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. for a period of approximately 2 weeks. Train testing will continue during the daytime hours.

There will be noise associated with this work such as grinding from the rail grinder, along with smells associated with burning metal. TransEd is committed to doing everything possible to mitigate noise and vibrations during work in this area. The noisiest works will be completed earlier in the evening, where possible.
