66 Street and Area – Traffic Disruption


EDMONTON, AB – February 28, 2017 – Starting late March, to accommodate the construction of LRT track beds, traffic lanes will be modified, or shifted, on 66 Street affecting motorists. Pedestrian walkways in the area will be maintained.  

Work will take place in the following areas:

  • During peak and off peak hours, 66 Street from south of 28 Avenue to north of 41 Avenue will see:
    • Northbound and southbound traffic will be shifted to the west side of 66 St. between intersections while crews work on the roadway on the east side.
    • Dedicated right turn lanes will be closed at the intersections of 66 St. and 28 Avenue and 34 Avenue.
    • Speed will be reduced to 50 km/hour
  • During night hours (9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.) 66 Street from south of 28 Avenue to north of 41 Avenue, on 34 Avenue and 38 Avenue at 66 Street and on 28 Avenue at 66 Street, Youville Drive. and Hewes Way
    • Additional through lanes, and dedicated left and right turn lanes will be closed
    • Speed will be reduced to 50 km/hour

To accommodate this work, the public may be impacted in the following areas:

  • Expect travel delays as a result of shifting lanes and/or lane closures and reduced speed to 50 km/hour.
  • Any shifts to traffic lanes will be in effect 24 hours/day, including during peak hours (6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.) and overnight hours (9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.) as noted above. Please obey all signs and detours.
  • Vehicle and pedestrian traffic to observe all construction signage and the directions of personnel in the area.
  • TransEd is required to complete construction activities within the requirements of the City of Edmonton Noise Bylaw*. TransEd will complete some roadwork overnight to avoid major daytime traffic disruptions. TransEd has a permit in place that allows for this overnight work to take place.

Alternate Routes:

  • Motorists may wish to consider taking alternate routes north/southbound instead of 66 Street, such as 34 Street, 50 Street, 91 Street or 99 Street.
