VIDEO: Virtual Project Update for Strathearn and Holyrood

TransEd Valley Line LRT held a virtual meeting where we shared updates on construction, project milestones, train testing, and what we are doing to keep our crews, their families and the neighbourhoods they work in safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.

October 8, 2020 – Starting on or around October 14, crews will be removing and rebuilding a portion of the sidewalk on 83 Street between 84 Avenue and 86 Avenue. To accommodate this work, a portion of this sidewalk will be closed, however pedestrian access will be maintained. This closure will take place during peak, off-peak, and overnight hours and is expected to last three weeks.

This work will primarily occur during the day (7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.) however, some of this work will need to be accomplished at night. Work that generally creates the most noise and vibrations will be completed during daytime hours.
Pedestrians can use the west side of 83 Street to walk north and south during this time. Crosswalks are located at 84 Avenue and 86 Avenue.

To accommodate this work, the public will be impacted in the following areas:
• Sidewalk removals on the east side of 83 Street between 84 Avenue and 86 Avenue.
• There will be noise associated with this work, specifically the breaking of concrete. As much as possible, the noisiest work will be done earlier in the night or during the day.

Vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic disruptions will vary by location. During this time please watch for, and observe, all traffic detours and direction of construction personnel.

September 22, 2020 – Starting on or around September 29, crews will be removing and rebuilding the sidewalk and the driveway access along the east side of 83 Street between 83 Avenue and 84 Avenue.

This work will take place overnight between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. and will last for approximately three weeks. There will be noise associated with this work as crews will have to saw cut and break through the existing concrete. As much as possible, the noisiest work will be completed earlier in the night or during the day.

Pedestrians can use the west side of 83 Street to walk north and south during this time. Crosswalks are located at 82 Avenue and 84 Avenue.

The driveway accesses will be done half at a time to maintain vehicle access to the residents.

September 14, 2020 – On or about September 19, 2020 TransEd will be transporting and installing rail at the intersection of 76 Avenue and 83 Street.  To accommodate this work, 76 Avenue will be closed to through traffic overnight between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.  This work is expected to last three nights, 1.5 nights for each Phase.

To accommodate this work, the public will be impacted in the following areas:

 Phase 1

  • Westbound traffic will need to turn right onto 83 Street northbound.
  • Eastbound traffic will be closed just west of 83 Street.
  • Southbound traffic on 83 Street will be closed from 76 to 77 Avenue.

Phase 2

  • Eastbound traffic will need to turn right onto 83 Street southbound.
  • Westbound traffic will be closed just east of 83 Street.
  • Southbound traffic on 83 Street will be closed from 76 to 77 Ave

September 9, 2020 – Starting on or around September 14, crews will begin final paving on 83 Street between Argyll Road and 82 Avenue.  Crews will be starting at Argyll Road and work northward to 82 Avenue. Once that lane is completed, they will repeat the process southward from 82 Avenue to Argyll Road.  Crews will first close the side streets and pave those to match up with the mainline of 83 Street and then close the northbound then southbound lanes to tie it in together.

This work will take place overnight between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. and will last for approximately one week.

There will be noise associated with this work.  Specifically, the sound of heavy equipment (engine noises), back up alarms when necessary, and pavement grinding.  In order to not interrupt traffic during the day, crews will have to perform all of this work during night hours. As much as possible, the noisiest work will be completed earlier in the night.

To accommodate this work, the public will be impacted in the following areas:

  • Intermittent overnight closures of the side streets off 83 Street September 14 & 15*
  • Full overnight closure of the Northbound lane on 83 Street between Argyll Road and 82 Avenue September 16 & 17*
  • Full overnight closure of the Southbound lane on 83 Street between 82 Avenue and Argyll Road September 18 & 19*

Crews will be starting at 82 Avenue and work their way south to Argyll Road.  This work is expected to last one week.

  • Alternating lane closures on 83 Street at 87 Avenue for two nights.
  • There will be minimal noise associated with this work, mainly backup beepers.
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained.

September 3, 2020 – Starting on or around September 10, crews will be doing spot repairs on the sidewalks along 83 Street from 69 Avenue to 81 Avenue on both sides of the street. Crews will be starting at 69 Avenue and working north to 81 Avenue. There may be intermittent lane closures in areas where crews need more space to work.

This work will take place overnight between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. and will last for approximately two weeks.

These sidewalks are being re-poured to repair damages or deficiencies caused since they were originally built. Sidewalks will be intermittently closed overnight in sections as crews work. Please watch for and observe all construction signage and personnel.

There will be noise associated with this work as crews will have to saw cut and break through the existing concrete. In order to not interrupt traffic during the day, crews will have to perform all of this work during night hours. As much as possible, the noisiest work will be completed earlier in the night.

August 7, 2020 – Crews are currently performing nighttime earthworks on 83 Street between Argyll Road and 82 Avenue.  This work includes but is not limited to concrete removals, trackbed tie-ins, gravel placement, and concrete curb reconstruction. This work will take place overnight between 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. and is expected to last approximately six weeks. To accommodate this work, there will be alternating lane closures on both the southbound and northbound lanes on 83 Street between Argyll Road and 82 Avenue.  Flaggers will be on hand to assist motorists.

There will be noise associated with this work. In order to not interrupt traffic during the day, crews will have to perform all or some of this work during night hours. TransEd is aware that overnight noise is disruptive and has taken several noise mitigation actions in advance of this work such as the installation of noise blankets, where possible, ahead of the work beginning and reducing the use of back up alarms.

To accommodate this work, the southbound curb lane on 83 Street between 90 Avenue and 86 Avenue will be closed overnight between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.  This work is expected to last five nights.

To accommodate this work, the public will be impacted in the following areas:

  • Overnight work on 83 Street between 90 Avenue and 86 Avenue.
  • Southbound curb lane on 83 Street will be closed.
  • There will be noise associated with this work, mainly backup beepers and digging.

July 31, 2020 – Starting on or about August 14, 2020, EPCOR will begin installing the signal poles and davit arms (the arms from which the signal lights will hang) on 82 Avenue and 83 Street.  This work will occur overnight from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. for one night.  There will be alternating lane closures in this intersection as the work is completed.  Flaggers will be on site to assist traffic.

To accommodate this work, the public will be impacted in the following areas:

  • Overnight work on 82 Avenue and 83 Street.
  • Flaggers will be on hand to assist traffic.
  • There will be noise associated with this work – mainly the noise from the use of an impact gun to tighten bolts.
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained.

July 27, 2020 – Starting on or about August 14, 2020, TransEd crews will begin installing the steel for the Avonmore Stop on 83 Street and 73 Avenue.  This work will occur overnight from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. for two weeks. 

During the first week, the northbound lane of 83 Street between Argyll Road and 76 Avenue will be closed to traffic overnight.  The southbound lane will be closed to traffic overnight during the second week.

To accommodate this work, the public will be impacted in the following areas:

  • Overnight work on 83 Street and 73 Avenue.
  • There will be noise associated with this work – mainly the noise from a crane and the use of an impact gun to tighten bolts and
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained.
